A cabaret dancer turned war plotter inside Lascaris war headquarters, a Maltese woman living in Tunisia who joins an underground resistance network to relay information about axis movements to the British until she was arrested, a Maltese girl who whilst in Rome, joined an underground operation to save allied prisoners of war and Jews from death camps.
These are just some of the most extraordinary stories that will be told in “The Women of George Cross Island” – an eight-episode docudrama told by the very last survivors of World War 2.
This production is yet another TV project being supported by GO through its €1 million fund announced last year as part of its commitment to keep bringing more added value to its loyal customers, in fact, the production will be aired exclusively on GO Originals this coming October.
“Each story is simply amazing, to the point that every one of them merits consideration to be turned into a script for a major movie production. This is why we are all extremely excited and cannot wait for this series to start showing this coming October – it is our way of commemorating these extraordinary women,” said Alison Mercieca, Senior Manager, Marketing at GO.
“We are also proud that this initiative was yet another opportunity for us at GO to support and collaborate with yet another local production house, Sharp Shoot Media, and its exceptionally talented team of creatives. We are delighted at how the producers, writers and the rest of the team have collaborated with researchers and historians who have lent extra power to the historical footage and political events that have shaped this important period in Malta’s history,” added Alison Mercieca.
“‘The Women of George Cross Island’ will do justice to the strength, the perseverance and intelligence of a small number of extraordinary women whose courage and determination helped change the course of the war. More importantly, this docudrama examines the personal lives and wartime work of these women which many times, goes unaccounted for. This is what makes this production even more compelling,” said producers Justin Farrugia and Steven Dalli from Sharp Shoot Media.
The women featured in this new GO Originals production will be Christina Ratcliff, Dr Irene Condachi, Ella Attias nee Zammit Cutajar, Henrietta Chevalier and her daughter Gemma Sands, Mabel Strickland, Mary Miles, Meme Cortis, Mike Morris, Winifred Cutajar Becks and ‘Mary Man’.
