Internet, mobile, TV, eSIM and everything you need to sort when starting your new life in Malta

So, you’ve done it. You’ve packed up your life, said your goodbyes, booked the one-way ticket and you’re moving to Malta. Get ready for sun-drenched limestone streets, café culture that actually slows you down, a Mediterranean sea you can swim in for nine months of the year and a surprisingly buzzing expat community waiting to welcome you.

But here’s the thing nobody tells you before you land. The first 48 hours are a blur of logistics. Where’s the nearest supermarket? How do I get a local number? Can someone please explain what a ċentru tas-saħħa is? And above all, how do I get online?
That last one is critical. Before you can find a flat on Facebook Marketplace, book your identity card appointment, figure out the bus routes or video-call your mum to prove you’re not living in a cave, you need to be connected.

Whether you are moving for work, study, family or just a fresh start by the sea, this guide will help you understand what you need for mobile, internet and TV in Malta.

Step 1: Request an eSIM as soon as you land

An eSIM is a digital SIM card built directly into your phone. No physical card, no trip to a shop, no rummaging through a tiny plastic envelope at the airport. You get issued a QR code and once you’re in Malta, you scan it, download the profile and you’re live.

One important thing to know, while you can arrange your GO eSIM in advance, activation needs to happen once you’ve arrived in Malta, so the smart move is to get the process started before you fly, request your eSIM, have the QR code ready on your email and then activate it as soon as you touch down. That way you’re not losing precious time faffing around when you should be getting a taxi and marvelling at the sunshine.

Why does the speed matter? Because the second you land, you’ll need data. You’ll need Google Maps to get from the airport to your accommodation. You’ll need WhatsApp to tell people you’ve arrived. You’ll need to look up literally everything. Doing all of that on airport Wi-Fi, while juggling two suitcases and jet-lagged confusion, is not the vibe.

Is your phone eSIM-compatible?

Most modern smartphones are. A quick breakdown:

  • Apple: All iPhones from the XS/XR onwards support eSIM, including the iPhone SE (2nd & 3rd gen) and the entire iPhone 11 through 17 series.
  • Samsung: The Galaxy S20 through S25, Z Flip and Z Fold series, Galaxy Note20, and select A-series models (A35/A36, A54/A55/A56) are all supported.
  • Xiaomi: The 14T Pro and 15T Pro are compatible.
  • OnePlus: The OnePlus 15 works with GO’s eSIM.
  • Google: The Pixel 10 Pro is supported.

Not sure? On an iPhone, go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Mobile Data’ > ‘Add eSIM’. If the option is there, you’re good. On Samsung, go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Connections’ > ‘SIM Manager’ > ‘Add eSIM’. Still not certain? Pop into any GO outlet on arrival and the team will check for you in seconds.

Our eSIM plans are also designed to work alongside your existing physical SIM, so you can run a dual-SIM setup from day one. Your home SIM and your new Maltese number coexisting peacefully on the same device, no phone juggling required.

Step 2: Get a Maltese mobile plan

Once you’re in Malta and starting to find your feet, getting a proper local mobile plan should be top of your to-do list, right up there with finding a good pastizzi shop.

Why do you need a Maltese number?

Pretty much everything in Malta requires a local number. Opening a bank account? They’ll text you a verification code. Registering for a doctor? Local number. Applying for your e-Residency card? You guessed it. It’s also cheaper to call local numbers from a local plan and it signals to people that you’re here for real, not just passing through.

What documents do you need?

You’ll typically need:

  • A valid passport or ID card
  • Proof of your Malta address (a rental agreement or utility bill works once you have one)

Prepaid (top-up) vs. Postpaid (pay monthly)

This is the big question, and the answer depends entirely on your situation.

Top-up / Prepaid is great if you’ve just arrived and aren’t sure how long you’re staying or if you want to test things out before committing. You load credit, you use it, simple. No contract, no credit check, no obligation. Our top-up plans are a solid starting point.

Pay monthly / Postpaid is where you’ll get far more bang for your buck, such as unlimited data, EU roaming and international call allowances. Once you’re settled and know you’re sticking around, this is almost certainly the better deal. Our Freedom pay monthly plans feature unlimited local data and the ability to stay connected across Europe without sweating roaming charges.

The Moving to Malta Plan

A dedicated plan specifically for people relocating to the island, at €14.99/month, you get unlimited local data, 50GB when roaming in Zone 1 and 60 minutes and SMS worldwide. There’s no contract and no penalties. You can even add unlimited calls and SMS to Malta and the rest of Europe for just €5 more per month.

Head over to the Moving to Malta page and fill in the quick form. We’ll call you back to walk you through everything and get you set up.

An extra perk: Refer a Friend

Already know people in Malta or meeting fellow expats quickly? If a friend referred you to us, make sure to enter their number when signing up and you’ll both pocket €50. And once you’re settled, you can return the favour by referring your own newcomer friends.

Step 3: Set up your home internet

Okay, you’ve got mobile data sorted. Now for the one that really matters for your day-to-day life, home broadband.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what the options are:

1000Mbps (Giga Fibre) — The most popular choice

For most households, the Giga fibre plan is the sweet spot. 1000Mbps speeds mean you can run video calls, 4K streams, cloud uploads, gaming and your smart home devices simultaneously without anything breaking a sweat. We currently offer 6 months free on our Giga plan when committing for 24 months.

5 GIG — For power users

If you have an entire household of heavy users, run a home office at scale or simply want the fastest connection money can buy, our 5 GIG internet plan is available nationwide. Powered by Nokia Wi-Fi 7 technology, this is genuinely cutting-edge.

Plug’n’GO — The instant option

Just landed and can’t wait for an installation appointment? Plug’n’GO is a 4.5G portable modem that requires zero installation. It arrives at your door, you plug it in and you’re online within minutes. With speeds of up to 50Mbps, it’s the perfect bridge while you wait for your fibre installation or an equally solid permanent solution if you move around a lot.

Smart Wi-Fi – because dead zones are not your friends

Accommodation in Malta varies enormously. Some are open-plan and modern, others are ancient townhouses with thick limestone walls that Wi-Fi signals treat as solid brick. If your place is on the larger side or has an awkward layout, it’s worth considering our Smart Wi-Fi Starter Kit which includes intelligent Wi-Fi beacons that blanket your home in consistent signal, automatically adjusting based on where you are. No more dropping calls in the kitchen. No more buffering in the bedroom.
