What do I need to know about value added services such as premium services?

Premium rated services are special phone numbers that belong to private companies. When you use these numbers, whether you’re calling or sending texts, it’s going to cost you more than your regular calls and texts. This can happen whether you’re using your phone locally or when you’re abroad on your travels. These special numbers often get used for things like making charity donations, participating in votes, entering TV competitions, or signing up for subscription services.

Your regular phone plan might not cover these special services. So, if you use them, especially when you’re roaming in another country, you could end up with extra charges that aren’t part of your usual plan.

When you’re roaming abroad, you might find that some numbers, like those Maltese freephone numbers, premium rate numbers, or short codes, might not work. If they do work, they might cost you a bit more. If you’re trying to spot Maltese premium rated numbers, just look for ones that start with the number ‘5’. Freephone numbers usually start with ‘800’.
